Multiple landslides triggered by torrential rains in southern India have led to the deaths of 49 people so far. The landslides hit hilly villages in Kerala state’s Wayanad district, causing the destruction of houses and a bridge. Rescue operations are underway, but progress has been hindered by bad weather, blocked roads, and unstable terrain. Helicopters have been mobilized, and the Indian army is helping to build a temporary bridge. Kerala is prone to heavy rains, flooding, and landslides, with nearly 500 fatalities in 2018 due to floods. The state is currently on alert as more rain is predicted.
